MINIMISING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Lavazza promotes a vision that combines Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with the objective of taking a systemic approach to environmental sustainability.

The figures from the supply chain are markedly positive

The figures from the supply chain are markedly positive:

- the index of CO2 emissions per tonne of processed coffee (direct emissions) decreased by 17% in 2014, compared to 2012;
- in 2014, 100% of electrical energy for the operations of the Italian production plants comes from renewable sources;
- electrical consumption per unit of packaged coffee decreased by 8% between 2012 and 2014; 
- thermal energy decreased between 2012 and 2014 both in absolute terms (about 6%) and by unit of packaged coffee (about 17%).

3.9% savings on total industrial production costs were overall generated by improving the efficiency of production processes in 2014, compared to 2013.

These savings will be reinvested with a view to an ongoing improvement of production processes and a gradual reduction of the environmental impact. In fact, when reasoning in terms of Value Relevance, sustainability is considered as a “common thread” throughout the chain, from the raw material to the finished product, producing benefits in terms of medium and long-term added value.

With a view to minimising its environmental impact, Lavazza is also working hard to improve the efficiency of its capsule system, whose market is currently recording the biggest growth in the sector.

Lavazza is taking action along two fundamental lines:
the optimisation of current solutions, through the minimisation of weight and rationalisation of processes, as well as the internal reduction of waste.

Packaging is a particularly important area. Lavazza promotes and supports packaging eco-design in order to integrate its primary function of protecting and safeguarding the product, whilst, at the same time, minimising its environmental impacts.


Packaging eco-design

Packaging eco-design operates along 5 fundamental lines, with regard to product quality, technical and technological requirements and marketing:

- reducing packaging and removing non-essential components;
- reducing the weight or volume of materials used while maintaining the same product shelf life;
- simplifying structures to increase the use of recycled materials thereby reducing the use of virgin material;
- increasing the amount of recycled materials in packaging which is not in direct contact with food products;
- experimenting and implementing new materials to valorise the end of life of the packaging and introduce packaging designed to facilatate separate waste collection.


The most significant actions, in terms of packaging eco-design, have been aimed at reducing plastics, cardboard and layers of aluminium in non-primary polylaminates. Examples include:

- saving of approximately 11% in the material used for the production of capsules as a result of optimising the thermoformage process;
- reducing paper and wooden pallets for a total of 41 tonnes of paper and 467 platforms, thanks to the elimination of non-essential packaging components for Roast&Ground;
- achieving 90% of recycled materials in cardboard.

The most significant actions

The most significant results of the ecofriendly packaging design work carried out by Lavazza during the three-year reporting period include achieving 90% recycled material in its cardboard packaging.
Lavazza is working with the European Commission and the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, to define standards aimed at quantifying environmental impact of coffee using shared methodologies and processes.
