The aim of Goal 9 is to build resilient infrastructure, foster innovation, and promote fair, responsible and sustainable industrialisation.

The idea behind this work is to make a connection between the historical and modern eras of human development, highlighting the continuing nature of this evolution.

I also wanted to show that innovation and technological progress are the most important aspects of human development, because when implemented correctly, they facilitate and improve our quality of life. The character depicted in the work wears an outfit that combines women’s clothing from the past and present, incorporating a modern, high-tech style. The bottom half of the outfit depicts the cosmos, a reference to limitless explorations, research and development.

The character also has four hands: two are organic, the other two mechanical. This is my way of highlighting the benefits of different mechanical devices. One of the mechanical hands is clutching a transparent handbag in which we can see a modern aircraft, a vehicle used to bring the future forward. In the second mechanical hand we see a book, symbolising the mastery of reason and the use of technology to avert disasters. I am thinking of writing my favourite subject on the book: “Industry, innovation, technology”. Under one of its organic arms, the character is holding an astronaut’s helmet;

in its other organic hand the character holds the Earth, on which a turtle is sitting. This turtle has mechanical legs and is wearing virtual reality goggles.

With this element, I wanted to show that the myth of the Earth resting on the back of a turtle and on the backs of elephants has long been dispelled; a fact that can be disproved with certainty nowadays, thanks to technology and years of research. The overall appearance of the character holding the planet is meant to show that humanity is following the right path, and that the planet is safe in the hands of responsible, highly-evolved people.
